Why Do We Need to Remember Death Every Day?
Remembering death is a practice encouraged in Islam because it strengthens faith and keeps us away from the carelessness of this world. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“ Remember the destroyer of pleasures – namely death – often, because when it is remembered in a state of many sins, it can reduce those sins, and when it is remembered in a state of little worship, it will increase those worships.”
(Narrated by al-Baihaqi in Syu'ab al-Iman, 7/353)
This hadith shows that remembering death encourages us to increase our good deeds and appreciate every moment of life. We become more aware of repenting of our sins, improving our relationship with Allah SWT, and doing good to our fellow human beings.
Apart from that, remembering death helps us not to love the world too much. Allah SWT says:
" Take provision, and indeed the best provision is piety, and fear Me, O people of understanding."
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 197)
By realizing that death is certain, we are motivated to prepare the best supplies for the afterlife. Life becomes more meaningful when we live with repentance, asceticism towards the world, and always strive to be obedient servants of God. This practice makes us better prepared to face eternal life in the afterlife.
